Five Basic Cleansing Methods

The Sanskrit term Panchkarma translates five therapeutic procedures.Pancha refers to the number five and the karma refers to the therapy that brings about homeostasis by way of evacuation of accumulated morbid dosha. These therapies cleanse the body of toxins to improve functions and restore a balanced and healthy system.
Vaman
Therapeutic Vomiting/ Emesis Therapy

Vamana karma is a process of expelling the dosha accumulated in the amashaya(gastrium) by oral administration of emetics.This therapy eliminates the diseases caused by excessive Kapha.

Virechana
Therapeutic Purgation Therapy

Virechana is therapeutic procedure evacuation of the fecal matter and other accumulation of dosha in the lower gastrointestinal tract through the anal route. Diseases caused by excess pitta, Ayurveda has therapeutic purgation therapies.

Basti
Medicated Oil/Decoction Enema Therapy

The administration of the liquid medicine through the rectal, urethral or vaginal route is collectively referred by the name Basti.
There are mainly two treatments in Basti:
Snehbasti – Oil Enema Therapy
Kashayabasti – Herbal Decoction Enema Therapy
